Following the shtick of the series, in which people use their video cameras, iPhones and laptops to capture hauntings, “The Marked Ones” purports to have been shot entirely by Hector on a sporty little camcorder he got as a high-school graduation gift. In addition to that nasty bite mark - a tip of the hat to the first two “ Paranormal Activity” films - many of the core elements of the earlier movies are retained here, including the increasingly annoying found-footage gimmick. Adolescence can be so hard, especially when you’re possessed. The drawback is that he also finds grotesque, foot-long black hairs growing where they shouldn’t, like in his eye socket. One day he wakes up and he can levitate, do amazing tricks on his skateboard and hurl bullies through the air as if he’s Thor from “The Avengers.” Unlike the first four films, in which normal people are terrorized by a paranormal force, the new film shows Jesse - who’s been “marked” with what looks like an animal bite - suddenly developing supernatural powers, as did the kids in “ Chronicle” (2012).

Targeted to a Latino audience, “The Marked Ones” centers on two teenage friends, Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and Hector (Jorge Diaz), who stumble upon a world of dark, invisible forces when they break into the apartment of a creepy neighbor (Gloria Sandoval) after she is inexplicably murdered by their seemingly straight-arrow classmate (Carlos Pratts). This sharp left turn takes the films’ mythology in strange and not entirely satisfying new directions, including a crazy time-travel element.

See it if you must but don’t plan on being on the edge of your seat with your head buried in your hands like the audiences in the promos.“Paranormal Activity” fans hoping for a continuation of - or perhaps a bit of closure to - the supernatural saga that has stretched out over four films since the 2007 original insinuated itself into their nightmares may be disappointed by “ Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.” As the subtitle of the new, unnumbered film indicates, the fifth chapter in the series isn’t so much a sequel as a spinoff.

As for Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones I just feel that it is more of a potential money grab idea rather than a movie that has a lot of thought put into it. What had such a promising start as a cutting edge found footage original movie in 2007, the latest has found its way off the beaten path. Maybe then the bar will be raised and the producers will get back to basics. Hopefully if indeed this chapter does under perform it’ll put some serious pressure (and focus) on Paranormal Activity 5 due out on October 24, 2014. That’s what I envision for The Marked Ones. I do not wish for the demise of any movie but sometimes a part of something has to die to make the whole stronger. You’d be better served waiting until it is available to watch in the comfort of your own home at a much reduced rate. The “jump moments” that make these types of movies enjoyable were far too few for me to recommend dropping premium box office cash on this one. As a horror/thriller movie The Marked Ones lacked both scary and/or thrilling scenes. I liked all of the new characters introduced and thought they did a decent job acting. The humor was bumped up a notch which is always good in my mind. The great thing about that is there’s no time to dawdle so the story is constantly moving. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones clocks in at a mere 84 minutes. Having said that, there is a minor tie-in to the other movies. Where it does differ is that the plot is not focused directly on the family from the first four movies. The Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones strategy is no different in that regard. They get their little hype machine going with the commercials of terrified audiences and word of mouth spreads like wildfire. The people behind the Paranormal Activity franchise do a masterful job of its advertising. So is this worth seeing? Keeping reading… Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is rated R for pervasive language, some violence, graphic nudity and some drug use. This story is centered around Jesse who has been “marked” thus being pursued by mysterious forces.

Well the franchise is back at it again in 2014 but this time it looks to be following a new arc. That was the pattern from 2010 through 2012 when every year we got a sequel (or prequel) to the original released in 2007. Another year another Paranormal Activity movie.
